COLUMBIA, S.C. - Juanita Goggins was the first black woman elected to the South Carolina Legislature in 1974 and was a revered lawmaker. Unfortunately, 30 years later, Goggins froze to death alone in her rented house at the age of 75. More than a week had passed before her body was discovered.
In 1974, Goggins told The Associated Press, "I am going to Columbia to be a legislator, not just a black spot in the House chambers."
State Senator John Land and fellow Democrat said, “I'm very saddened. People like her you want to see live forever. She had quite a gift for helping others.â€
